At Benchmark, our Recreation Therapy department uses treatment, education and recreation services to help our patients enhance their health, functional abilities, and overall quality of life. Our programming is based on Resiliency Theory, which teaches our patients to have the necessary attitudes and skills to overcome the challenges they face in life. Our daily groups and community outings are focused on the resiliency theory domains of creativity, humor, independence, insight, relationships, initiative, and values orientation. Our state certified Recreation Therapists and technicians work as a team to improve a patient’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Daily Recreation Therapy Group
Monday through Friday groups are facilitated by a licensed Recreation Therapy Technician or Specialist as part of the Benchmark School curriculum. These groups are based on resiliency skills and attitudes including values orientation, initiative, independence, creativity, insight, humor and relationships.
Weekly outings focus on leisure awareness and community integration. Popular outings include activities such as hiking in the nearby Wasatch Mountains, visiting museums, attending sporting events, or trying out a new local restaurant. Each trip has a meaning as it helps patients identify their objectives while socializing with peers. Examples of activities include:
- River Rafting
- Lake/ Water sports
- Ropes Course
- Cross Country Skiing
- Equine & Pet therapy
We incorporate physical fitness into our programming through groups, outings, outdoor physical recreation and our “healthy bucks” incentive program.
Community Outreach program
Patients are given the opportunity to give back to the community and learn the importance of helping others in need. Service opportunities include:
- Working at the local food pantry
- Giving service at the local animal shelter,
- Aiding charities that benefit the regional Children’s Hospital
